# Create or update a category target

> Create, edit, pause, or remove a Miyo budget category target and choose the schedule that controls how much the category should receive.

A category target turns a budget amount into a repeatable instruction. Use one when you want Miyo to calculate how much a category needs this period or by a specific date.

  Category targets can be enabled gradually. If **Set budget target** does not appear for a category, continue entering the monthly budget amount directly.

## Set the target

  <Step title="Open a category">
    In **Plan your money → Monthly budget**, open the category's actions and select **Set budget target**.

  <Step title="Enter the target amount">
    Enter a positive amount. Its meaning depends on the cadence you choose next.

  <Step title="Choose a cadence">
    Select **Weekly**, **Monthly**, **Yearly**, or **By a date**.

    For a repeating cadence, the amount applies to each week, month, or year. For **By a date**, it is the total available balance you want by that date.

    For a repeating target, choose **Add another** or **Refill available**. See [Choose a funding style](/planning/funding-styles) for examples.

    Select **Set target**. Miyo shows the category's progress against the instruction.

## Choose a cadence

| Cadence       | The amount means                   | Example use                       |
| ------------- | ---------------------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| **Weekly**    | Amount for each week               | Groceries or commuting            |
| **Monthly**   | Amount for each month              | Dining or household supplies      |
| **Yearly**    | Amount for each year               | Annual fees or holiday spending   |
| **By a date** | Total balance to reach by one date | Insurance renewal or planned trip |

<Warning>
  A \$1,200 **Yearly** target means \$1,200 for each year. Use **By a date** when you mean one \$1,200 finish line on a specific date.

## Edit or remove a target

Open the category target again. Select **Save target** after changing it, or **Remove target** to return the category to a manually planned amount.
