# Choose a funding style

> Compare Add another and Refill available funding styles, see how money already available changes the next assignment, and choose the right target behavior.

The funding style answers one question: **Should money already available in this category reduce what I assign next?**

## Add another

Assign the full target again each period, even when money is left over. Use this when you want the category to accumulate.

<Tip>
  **Example:** Your monthly vacation target is \$1,000 and \$200 remains available. **Add another** calls for another \$1,000, leaving \$1,200 available after assignment if there is no new spending.
</Tip>

Good fits include:

* Building a travel fund every month.
* Setting aside a fixed amount for gifts throughout the year.
* Growing a maintenance reserve beyond the current balance.

## Refill available

Assign only enough to restore the available balance to the target. Use this when you want to maintain a capped reserve.

<Tip>
  **Example:** Your monthly car-repair target is \$1,000 and \$200 remains available. **Refill available** calls for \$800, bringing the category back to \$1,000.
</Tip>

Good fits include:

* Keeping a fixed buffer for household repairs.
* Restoring a monthly spending allowance after use.
* Maintaining a capped reserve without accumulating above it.

## Compare the result

| \$1,000 monthly target with \$200 available | Next assignment | Available after assignment |
| ------------------------------------------- | --------------: | -------------------------: |
| **Add another**                             |         \$1,000 |                    \$1,200 |
| **Refill available**                        |           \$800 |                    \$1,000 |

<Note>
  **Add another** can keep accumulating after the available balance reaches the target. **Refill available** needs no new assignment while the category is already full.
</Note>

## A quick way to choose

* Choose **Add another** if you mean, “Assign this much every period.”
* Choose **Refill available** if you mean, “Keep this much available.”
* Choose **By a date** instead if you mean, “Reach this one total by this date.”
